The term "karate" has been widely known in the Western world for a little more than forty years. To some,the word has almost a religious connotation;for others it evokes images of physical violence such as the bare hand breaking of bricks and boards,and combat between man and man or man and beast.

The Artof Karate

Karate is basically an art of unarmed self-defense. In this respect it is similar to judo and sumo wrestling. Its chief point of departure from the others is that karate emphasizes the kick,the open handed strike,and the closed fist strike rather than the take down,the hold,and the throw. So effective is this form of self-defense that it is said a karate master can defend himself against a great number of adversaries,human or animal.

Unique Karate Art

Karate is a unique art. Although there are many fighting methods in practice around the world they differ from karate technically. Karate is not the same as judo,boxing,kick-boxing, taekwondo, savate, sumo, kungfu or any other martial art.
